July Picnic and August Sale

As this very strange year continues, we are faced with continuing to cancel events. Our picnic is next on the chopping block. The Cooperative Extension offices are still closed – it doesn’t make sense to hold a gathering there if the building is closed and bathrooms would not be available. So we felt it was the best decision to cancel the picnic.

We are also cancelling our Annual Sale at Faddegon’s Nursery in August. It would be difficult to control the number of people in the annual house at one time and social distance the line of people waiting. Also, there is a limit to the number of people that can be in the garden center at the same time. Faddegon’s isn’t comfortable hosting the sale. In addition, the sale prep would be difficult to coordinate. So, all in all, we felt it was best not to hold the sale this year.

We’ll see how things go for September. It may be possible to do a talk through Zoom. Many speakers are using Zoom to present their talks to people. It has worked very well in several presentations.

HADS Scholarship Winner!
From Cindy Jennings, Scholarship Chair

Many “thanks” go out to the excellent committee members who chose a wonderful candidate for the 2020 HADS Scholarship. This year’s student recipient, Samantha Bjorklun was a student from Schenendehowa High School who plans to attend college this fall majoring in Environmental Science at Syracuse Environmental School of Forestry.

While in high school Samantha had excellent school achievement; she was a member of the Science National Honor Society where she became an active participant in food sustainability by helping to implement composting bins throughout the school grounds. She is presently working outside the home to assist her family in making her dream to go to college possible.

Samantha wrote a “thank you” note to the membership expressing her appreciation for being chosen as this year’s scholarship winner. She wrote of her concern as to the future with the COVID-19 virus and how colleges will handle enrollments, but she is hopeful she will still be able to attend college in the fall.

June Meeting

We have decided to cancel the June Meeting and Members’ Sale for this year. The Cooperative Extension offices are still closed.

We are still anticipating holding the Annual Sale at Faddegon’s in August. However, as we muddle through this pandemic, things could change.

Discussions are underway about whether we will be able to hold the picnic. No decisions have yet been made and there will most likely be restrictions.

We will keep you updated on changes.

Just in case we are able to hold the Faddegon’s sale, keep an eye on your daylilies and see if you have any that can be included in the sale. Many details still remain to be worked out, but we’re trying to plan.

MAY MEETING

We had to cancel our originally scheduled meeting in early May as you all know. However, the Master Gardeners have graciously set up a Zoom meeting for us so we can all hear Cathie Gifford’s presentation on ‘Shakespeare in the Garden.” The Zoom meeting is set for May 30th at 10:30 am.

It’s very easy to attend a Zoom meeting. Just go to Zoom.us and download the software to your computer, tablet or phone.

There is a link in the notice below which will register you for the meeting. You will then receive an email from the Master Gardeners with the link for the meeting itself. If you have already registered, you should have received a recent email from Carole Henry which also contained a password to join the meeting. In case you have trouble joining the meeting, the password is 8uCJVB.

Just open the email on Saturday May 30th at 10:20 am and click on the link. It will take you out to the meeting where you will be admitted by the meeting administrator.

We’re looking forward to possibly seeing you on Saturday and to hearing Cathie’s presentation.

You are invited to a Zoom meeting.
When: May 30, 2020 10:30 AM Eastern Time (US and Canada)

Babysitters

Just a reminder to let Frank Almquist and Sharon Gallucci know how many fans you have on your babysitter plants. We’re still unsure whether or not we’ll be able to hold the June meeting, but Frank and Sharon keep track of all the babysitter plants and how many fans they have each year in any case. So please let them know. Thanks so much for your help.
