  2021 – Restarting Activities
As things open up, we are starting to add things back to the calendar, even if we have to make changes to accommodate the new normal. The Cooperative Extension offices are still closed to us, but the employees have returned to work, so we are hoping they may come up with rules to allow us back soon.

As we wait, we are planning a bus day trip to the regional meeting in Avon, CT. The details are still being ironed out, but due to covid, the meeting is only in the afternoon and we are planning to visit gardens on the way there and the way back. The date is Saturday July 17, 2021, and we are hoping to leave around 8 am from some exit off the Northway in Latham or Colonie. We think we will be returning between 7 and 8 pm. For more details and how to sign-up: http://hudsonadirondackdaylilysociety.org/?page_id=6453

Also, the Faddegon’s sale, also known as the Annual Sale, has been approved for the morning of August 21. This is a sale of daylilies to the members and the public. In order to make this sale happen, it requires lots of help from the members the week before the sale. If you are able, please consider helping. We need to dig some plants, clean the separate them, and package and label for the sale. The specific dates/times/places will be published as we get closer and can judge the weather. We will also need help with setup at Faddegon’s on the day of the sale.

And if you have plants to donate to the sale, we will need that information ahead of time so was can prepare. Watch your email for details on what we need. And we are grateful to people who can dig their own plants, but talk to us if you need help and we will see what we can do.

July Picnic and August Sale

As this very strange year continues, we are faced with continuing to cancel events. Our picnic is next on the chopping block. The Cooperative Extension offices are still closed – it doesn’t make sense to hold a gathering there if the building is closed and bathrooms would not be available. So we felt it was the best decision to cancel the picnic.

We are also cancelling our Annual Sale at Faddegon’s Nursery in August. It would be difficult to control the number of people in the annual house at one time and social distance the line of people waiting. Also, there is a limit to the number of people that can be in the garden center at the same time. Faddegon’s isn’t comfortable hosting the sale. In addition, the sale prep would be difficult to coordinate. So, all in all, we felt it was best not to hold the sale this year.

We’ll see how things go for September. It may be possible to do a talk through Zoom. Many speakers are using Zoom to present their talks to people. It has worked very well in several presentations.

HADS Scholarship Winner!
From Cindy Jennings, Scholarship Chair

Many “thanks” go out to the excellent committee members who chose a wonderful candidate for the 2020 HADS Scholarship. This year’s student recipient, Samantha Bjorklun was a student from Schenendehowa High School who plans to attend college this fall majoring in Environmental Science at Syracuse Environmental School of Forestry.

While in high school Samantha had excellent school achievement; she was a member of the Science National Honor Society where she became an active participant in food sustainability by helping to implement composting bins throughout the school grounds. She is presently working outside the home to assist her family in making her dream to go to college possible.

Samantha wrote a “thank you” note to the membership expressing her appreciation for being chosen as this year’s scholarship winner. She wrote of her concern as to the future with the COVID-19 virus and how colleges will handle enrollments, but she is hopeful she will still be able to attend college in the fall.
