APRIL MEETING CANCELLED

Not surprisingly, the April meeting was cancelled. We are still under “Stay at Home” orders and businesses are closed, including the Cooperative Extension offices. Many of us were looking forward to Denise’s presentation on succulents; hopefully, we’ll be able to connect with Denise at some time in the future.

Next on the Agenda

We are all waiting to see what happens next with the restrictions on gatherings. It is highly unlikely we will be able to hold the May meeting. But we will let you know when decisions are made.

We are still anticipating holding the Members’ Sale on June 20th. Hopefully we’ll be able to get together by then. We will, of course, let you know more details as we all muddle through this.

It was great to see everyone at the Winter Doldrums. Once again, I am back as co-chair of HADS. Thank you for your confidence in me. There have been several cancellations due to Covid19. I am sorry we had to cancel our meetings for March and April. As you may know by now the Regional has been cancelled and rolled over to next year in Hartford, CT, same hotel.

Regional Meeting Cancelled

The 2020 CT Daylily Society Region 4 Summer Meeting has been cancelled. The club is looking into a postponement until July 16-18, 2021 but is not able to confirm that at this early date.

Many of us were looking forward to attending the meeting. If you have made hotel reservations, you may want to cancel the reservation.

Perhaps our club could investigate a visit to O’Brien’s Nursery during their peak daylily display on that weekend instead.

Virtual Tour Anyone?

Do you miss being able to get out and visit gardens? While we are all restricted from going to some of our favorite places, many of the public gardens have put up pictures and videos on their websites of what is blooming in their gardens. So, we can take virtual tours of some gardens and enjoy the gardens through technology.

Many thanks to Kathryn Mohr who sent me the link to Keukenhof which gave me the idea to look into other gardens.

MARCH MEETING CANCELLED

The notification of the cancellation of the meeting and the flower show was sent out to everyone previously. We will all miss the taste of Spring the flower show provided. If we learn of more cancellations, we will again send out notices.

In the meantime, please stay healthy and stay safe. Thankfully, we can still get out in our gardens! I’m trying to get a jump on the spring cleanup. Also enjoying the little iris reticulatas, snowdrops and crocuses!

April Meeting

At this point we anticipate being able to hold the April meeting; but, of course, everything depends on how the Coronavirus outbreak progresses. As we all try to cope with this crisis, we will let you know when decisions are made.

Hopefully, Denise Maurer, will be able to give her talk on succulents at the meeting on April 18th.

NO NEW BABYSITTERS FOR 2020

A few weeks ago we reviewed the Babysitter Program inventory (plants in member gardens) and found we have way too many. With the change in return plants policy from five to seven or more fans, and the great plant shopping by Sharon, we currently have 92 plants outstanding. Drop in attendance at the member auction has also cut back on dollar return to the program. It is hard to buy a new cultivar in the hundred dollar range, grow it to five or six fans then get a good return on two double fans. The change to a larger returning clump helped with more fans available, consequently, the bidding price more acceptable to members. All this considered, we have a lot of plants to grow and return for auction.

Until we work down this inventory and recoup some of the dollars invested, the committee is recommending we forego purchasing new plants. Those now growing in member gardens are all great cultivars, have excellent parents, with wonderful features, e.g. bloom quality, branching, etc. These plants will do well at auction, after they clump up a bit.

Soooooooooo – now is the time to get your babysitter plants growing; also time to follow the Bryan Culver practice of early feeding. Spread a handful your favorite general

purpose garden fertilizer around each clump, away from the crown, but over the root area. In a few days the material will dissolve into the soil allowing nutrients to be around the roots. When the soil warms into the 50s growth will begin and food will be available. The noses of your clumps should be visible, or will be soon. Here in tropical Kingston, a few crowns have little green points about an inch high. Snow and rain have been sparse and soil moist but walkable without significant compression. If you do see moisture around your footstep, stay off the garden until it is drier.

One more thing, now that you see your clumps, count the babysitter fans. We need that information by May 1 to know what plants are coming back for the auction. Contact us.
