January Meeting

Now that the hustle and bustle of the Holidays is behind us, it’s time to think about plants! We are looking forward to Denise Maurer’s presentation on “Stunning Succulents” at our meeting on January 18th at the William K. Sanford Library on Albany Shaker Rd. in Colonie. Please note that the meeting will start at 1:00 pm instead of our usual start time due to a scheduling conflict at the library.

You’ve got to love succulents. Give them plenty of sun, and water occasionally, and they will reward you with show stopping textures, colors and offspring. Learn how easy it is to incorporate them into your home and landscapes. Buying and growing tips will be included along with plenty of inspiration to create succulent dish gardens and vertical mosaics.

Denise Maurer is a Master Gardener with Cornell Cooperative Extension – Rensselaer County. As owner of Denise Maurer Interiors, she has specialized in residential interior design for over 30 years. Her sense of design is carried into her personal gardening style where she combines flowers and vegetables with ornamentation. Denise is a frequent speaker about gardening using color and design.

Winter Doldrums Gathering

No, it’s not the Flu or even a sickness that will hit you on February 16th. Maybe it’s more like a weariness and malaise that sets in after the Holidays and continues through mid-April or even later in some years. We like to think that part of the solution is to have a great garden talk, a luncheon and just get together to party a little! The Doldrums party is a really fun and educational event at a time when we’re all chomping at the bit to get back into our gardens!

Holiday Party

Our Holiday Party will be Saturday, December 14th – Gather at 12:00 Noon with lunch to be served at 12:15 pm.

This year’s gathering will again be a joint celebration with the UNYHS and HADS and will be at Dave and Cindy Jennings’ Church (Prince of Peace Lutheran Church at 4 Northcrest Dr., Clifton Park) in their fellowship hall
just off Rt. 146.

Dish to Share and Door Prizes:
As is our tradition, each member is asked to bring a favorite holiday dish to pass. A stove is available if food must be held at a warm temperature. As in the past, everyone is encouraged to bring a door prize to donate to make our festivities more memorable.

“Helping Hands” Toy or Book Donation:
We have decided to continue with our traditional theme again this year of “Helping Hands for the Holidays.” We ask both the Hosta and Daylily members to donate a NEW toy or Children’s book that will be given to the Ronald McDonald Houses located near and in Albany Medical Center. The three-house complex has a special “Toy Closet” where a child can select one toy to take with them when heading for surgery or a major procedure at the Medical Center. We ask that those willing to donate should be careful to not purchase toys from bulk imported stores where the toy may not have US Safety Approval due to the way it is manufactured. Also, please do not wrap the gift. The ages for the toys or books should be 2 to 12 years old. If you have questions, please feel free to contact Cindy – Holiday Party Chair

November Meeting

Our November meeting is Saturday, November 16th at 10 am at the Cooperative Extension offices on Martin Rd. in Voorheesville. Just in time for the season, our own HADS member Diane Steele will teach us how to make a lovely wreath from natural materials.

Diane will provide “collected” vines from around her house. We will be using willow, rose, birch, grapevine, honeysuckle, and bittersweet. Diane will teach us how to properly wrap the wreath that we construct. Based on size and shape, boxwood will be added. Diane will give us a printed sheet on materials that she has dried to use in wreath construction. She will also give us ideas on common materials such as dried flowers, pods, grasses and other materials that can be used to decorate the wreath. In addition, we can study some sample pieces that Diane will bring with her.
