January Meeting

To start off the new year, we will be meeting on Saturday, January 12th at 1:00 pm (please note the change in time) at the William K Sanford Library in Colonie. Debi Chowdhury went to the New York Botanical Garden to see the Holiday Train Show and has brought back a DVD of the show which we are pleased to be showing at the meeting.

New York City’s Favorite Holiday Tradition is Back! Model trains zip through a display of New York landmarks.

The enchanting setting of the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory showcases more than 175 scaled iconic buildings and structures such as the Brooklyn Bridge, Yankee Stadium, Rockefeller Center and the Statue of Liberty under thousands of twinkling lights. Step into a miniature city where famed New York architecture is recreated using bark, leaves, and other natural materials.

This year’s exhibition showcases Lower Manhattan—the birthplace of New York City—featuring Ellis Island and iconic skyscrapers sharing the spotlight among old and new favorites. Making their debut this year are One World Trade Center and the historic Battery Maritime Building along with two vintage ferry boats.

The exhibit contains more model trains than ever before, with nearly a half-mile of track hosting over a dozen large-scale model railway locomotives. NYC bridges come together to create an aerial display of trains soaring overhead!

It should be very exciting to see the model trains as they chug through the conservatory. Join us on Saturday, January 12th – bring a friend and a dish to share. Also, don’t foget that they are still working on the main entrance to the Library so you need to enter around the back!

Winter Doldrums

Melera, whose talk is entitled, “The Victorians: How They Forever Changed the Garden.” A gardening expert for 13 years, Barbara was President and CEO of The D. Landreth Seed Company, the oldest seedhouse in America established in 1784. She has a lot to offer and it should be an interesting and beautiful presentation. More information will be in the February newsletter – so stay tuned….

Topics for Discussion at
the January Meeting

We have contracted for a bus to the Regional Meeting on Long Island July 19th and 20th – there will be sign up sheets at the meetings. We are considering a refundable charge for members of $25 – this will ensure people don’t sign up and then not show up for the bus on the morning we leave. Guests are also welcome although they will be charged $50 (for $5 they can join the club and ride for free).

To encourage new members, we are looking at giving out a voucher for a free daylily. New members can redeem the voucher at the Members’ Sale in May from the Connoisseurs Table or at the Annual Sale at Faddegon’s in August.

We will discuss the possibility of rewarding members who donate daylilies to the Members’ Sale with vouchers towards daylilies they purchase at the sale.

We are also looking into getting t-shirts or polo shirts with the club logo. In order to get an idea of interest and sizes to order, we need input from the club members.

If you are interested in purchasing a shirt, please let Stephanie Kronau know by e-mail
or replying to this newsletter.
