November Meeting

Our November meeting is Saturday, November 16th at 10 am at the Cooperative Extension offices on Martin Rd. in Voorheesville. Just in time for the season, our own HADS member Diane Steele will teach us how to make a lovely wreath from natural materials.

Diane will provide “collected” vines from around her house. We will be using willow, rose, birch, grapevine, honeysuckle, and bittersweet. Diane will teach us how to properly wrap the wreath that we construct. Based on size and shape, boxwood will be added. Diane will give us a printed sheet on materials that she has dried to use in wreath construction. She will also give us ideas on common materials such as dried flowers, pods, grasses and other materials that can be used to decorate the wreath. In addition, we can study some sample pieces that Diane will bring with her.

Diane Steele has a unique perspective about her passion for watercolor based on her interests and formal training. With a master’s background in environmental science, and a broad range of hobbies including photography, gardening, and model railroading her desire is to embrace the subject by finding art in nature and then share the resulting gifts with the world. For more than 35 years as a floral designer, she has a unique perspective of all that are “flowers.” Her handcrafted bouquets of seasonal heirloom roses, rare iris, and fresh-picked lilies-of-the-valley from her perennial gardens lend themselves to sketches for the bridal proposals, future commissions, or paintings of unique style.

Diane has now expanded her endeavors by teaching basic watercolor in many locations in the Capital District. She has shown and sold her work throughout the Northeast, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania and won numerous awards. Her blog allows the visitor into the artist’s world and the joy involved in each new creation.

The three-house complex has a special “Toy Closet” where a child can select one toy to take with them when heading for surgery or a major procedure at the

October Meeting

The October meeting is Saturday, October 19th at 10 am at the Cooperative Extension offices on Martin Rd. in Voorheesville. We are very excited to have Dave Mussar coming from Canada to speak to us about his daylily hybridizing program and to give us a sneak peek at his new introductions for next year.

Dave has been seriously growing and breeding daylilies for 19 years. From the beginning his focus has been to develop a spotted daylily. That has expanded to include stripes and broken colors primarily at the tetraploid level. Dave has also done a lot of work with toothy daylilies using Brother Charles Reckamp cultivars as a starting base. He has also been working on tetraploid cristate forms based on his own daylily,
Kendra Marie.

In addition, Dave has tried his hand at conversions of diploid daylilies to tetraploid daylilies, which has taken him in several other directions. Dave has served as President of the Ontario Daylily Society for a number of years, chaired the annual Can Am Classic for a long time and served Region 4 as the Regional Publicity Director for several terms.

We can order daylilies for next year, but we should wait until Dave updates his website later this fall. Perhaps we can discuss doing a combined order or if people decide to go to the Can Am next May, we could coordinate a pickup there. You can see more of Dave’s daylilies on his website:
http://dave.mussar.com/

As our gardens wind down for the fall, it’s fun to anticipate next year’s daylily season. Come join us for a look into a daylily hybridizer’s life and work – bring a friend (we are always happy to have fellow enthusiasts join us). If you can, bring a dish to share or a donation for the door prize table.
