January Meeting

Our meeting is January 6th at 10 am at the William K Sanford Town Library in Colonie. Stacey from Brookside Nursery in Ballston Spa will speak about perennials and shrubs. Stacey manages the Garden Center at the nursery and
is very knowledgeable about plants. She orders the plants for the nursery and will have information about some that are not your typical “Grandmother’s” plants.

Also at the meeting, Debi Chowdhury will show her DVD of the Philadelphia Flower Show. So come in out of the cold and get your fix of plants and gardening to lighten the winter. Bring a friend and a dish to share.

Winter Doldrums

Everyone looks forward to our Winter Doldrums Party! This year the party will be Sunday,
February 18th at the Cooperative Extension offices in Voorheesville. We will start at 11 am to set up food and beverages. There will be much more about the party in February’s newsletter, but we wanted to pique your interest ahead of time. Our speaker will be Bill Waldrop from Kennesaw Mountain Daylilies in Georgia. He has an extensive garden of daylilies, hostas and irises and the full write up of his talk will be in the February newsletter.

Looking for Something to Do in January?

The Berkshire Botanical Garden’s Annual Winter Lecture will be held on Saturday, January 13th at 2:00 pm at the Lenox Memorial High School in Lenox, MA. The speaker this year is
Ken Druse who will speak about the New Shade Garden: Creating a Lush Oasis in the Age of Climate Change. Ken details new ways of looking at all aspects of the gardening process in topics such as designing your garden, choosing and planting trees, preparing soil, solving the deer problem, and the vast array of flowers and foliage – all within the challenges of a changing climate, shrinking resources, and new weather patterns. Ken knows that the best defense is to create a cool, verdant retreat – he says, “The garden of the future will be in the shade.”
