Daylilies in the article are:
Shelby by Margo Reed, 2010
and Vincent and Theo by
C.M. Barnes, 2004

If your Babysitter has a sufficient number of fans, Frank or Sharon will ask you to bring it in for the Members’ Auction on May 12th.

It will then be divided for sale in the auction. You will receive a fan to return to your garden as a ‘thank you’ for taking such good care of the plant while it was growing. Whether or not your plant comes back for auction, it’s important to let Frank or Sharon know how many fans the plant has this year. Frank and Sharon keep track of the plants each year to determine their ‘garden worthiness’ and whether the plants are doing well in our climate. If they pout and refuse to grow year after year, it may be that the plant needs a warmer zone and will be given to a Region 4 society further south. In any case, please remember to update Frank and Sharon on the progress of your babysitters each year.

Update on the Members’ Auction

The Members’ Auction is only a month away but plans are already coming together to acquire interesting daylilies to entice our members. We will have some plants from Bill Waldrop, who spoke at our Doldrums party and others from Melanie Mason and other hybridizers. Many of our daylily enthusiasts buy more expensive daylilies to enjoy in their gardens. Over time the plants grow and people would like to share them, but find that the plants are just too special to sell for $10 or $15 in our annual sale at Faddegon’s.

Daylilies in artricle:
Burnt Hickory and Opa Klaus
by Bill Waldrop

In the program that Bill has planned he will speak about a new double daylily that he’s made by crossing a seedling with Sebastian the Crab. Bill will also focus on his new double, OPA KLAUS and show us his introductions from 2018 and 2017, plus many additional introductions that have received honors from members
of AHS.

Bill Waldrop attended Marietta High School and Georgia State University before graduating from Mercer Law School. He practiced law for 30 years in Brunswick and Marietta. He started growing daylilies around 1995 and he liked them so much he eventually removed his entire ½ acre vegetable garden and instead planted just daylilies. Many friends came to see the daylilies and there were several newspaper articles about his garden. His daylily garden was featured on “Gardener’s Diary” on HGTV in 2001. As his interest grew, he served as General Counsel for the AHS from 2000 to 2005. He and his wife, Diana, ultimately founded the Cobb County Daylily Society, and he has served two terms as President, while Diana has served two terms as Secretary and is currently the President. Diana and Bill have been married forty-eight years and they have one daughter, Kelley, and one granddaughter, Lily Rae. Bill retired from his law practice in 2007 to grow daylilies full time. He currently has 71 daylily introductions. In addition to daylilies and his family, Bill enjoys photography, greenhouse gardening, and Georgia Tech sports. He is a member of the Marietta First United Methodist Church and has taught Sunday School for many years.

We still feel that the cheapest place to obtain the enlargements is at Wal-Mart, Target, Rite Aid or CVS but if you know of a better source…please let us know! When you arrive at the meeting, each member who will be entering photos will select their own mat color and mount their photos. A black or white mat will be supplied. Please place your name on the back side of each photo. Each member may submit up to two (2) photos per category.

The categories for this year’s photo contest are as follows:

BEST Shade Plant (s) that is NOT a Hosta.
BEST Hosta in a Pot (plain pot or decorative pot)
BEST Vegetable Garden shot

With permission, Dave Jennings would like to again scan your photos so that they can be used in one of their future newsletters. (A simple permission Form will be distributed at the meeting.) He will return originals once they are scanned for future use in our Shades of Green Newsletter if you request them.

So please consider entering those beautiful photos and of course ribbons will be once again awarded!

Please contact Cindy Jennings (UNYHS@aol.com) if you have any questions.

2018 Regional Meeting

There will be a Regional Meeting in 2018 – it will be held in Halifax, Nova Scotia, July 27th to 29th. The website is up and running with hotel information, schedules and registration information. The keynote speaker is Allan Banks, who is a member of the Nova Scotia Daylily Society and hybridizes locally in Nova Scotia. He has 30 registered daylilies. Get more information on the website:
