April Meeting

Join us on April 20th at 10 am at the Cooperative Extension offices on Martin Rd. in Voorheesville, NY, for an informative talk on Colchicums – they’re not really crocuses. But Kathy Purdy will clear up the differences.

Our speaker will be Kathy Purdy who will talk about Colchicums: Autumn’s Best-Kept Secret – Colchi-what? If you’ve never heard of colchicums before, you’ll be running to your catalogs to order some after hearing Kathy’s talk. These underused hardy bulbs bring bright color to the fall garden. Kathy will tell you everything you need to know to grow them successfully, including the best varieties for various garden situations and ideal plants to partner with them. She’ll even let you know her sources for the rarest and scarcest. If you don’t yet grow colchicums, it’s time you were in on the secret!

An award-winning garden blogger and writer, published in regional and national magazines, Kathy Purdy has grown colchicums for over twenty years. Charmed by these unusual corms, she became a colchicum evangelist, converting unsuspecting gardeners into confirmed colchicophiles. Kathy wrote the definitive article on colchicums for The American Gardener magazine in 2007. She currently grows over fifty varieties in her Chenango County garden.

Are Your Babysitter Plants Coming Up?

Yes, I know it’s early yet, but our daylilies are coming up! I’ve already had to put down Deer Scram because the pesky critters have started to munch the tender new shoots.

So as you survey your gardens, keep in mind that Frank Almquist and Sharon Gallucci need to know how many fans your babysitter plants have this year. It’s important to get this information to them as soon as possible, because if the babysitter has enough fans, it will come back to the Members’ Sale on May 11th. You will receive a fan to take back to your garden as a thank you for taking such good care of your babysitter plant.

It may seem early to ask for this information, but May 11th is only 4 weeks away and pictures and details for all the plants in the sale needs to be gathered. Thanks for your help in reporting on your babysitters!
