November Meeting

Our meeting will be early this month – Saturday, November 3rd at 10 am – and we move to our winter meeting place at the William K. Sanford Town Library on Albany Shaker Rd. in Colonie. The American Hemerocallis Society (AHS) has slideshows that can be downloaded and we will show two of their shows; one on Early daylilies and one on Very Late daylilies. We hope to get some good ideas on what daylilies are out there that we can add to our gardens to extend the daylily season. We all have daylilies that bloom in July and August and it’s not difficult to get a good show during those months. But wouldn’t it be lovely to have daylily blooms in June – and still be enjoying daylilies late in the season to keep our wonderful display going a bit longer. Join us on Saturday, November 3rd to add some daylily names to your list of “must haves” for next year.

Holiday Party

Our Holiday Party with UNYHS (Upstate NY Hosta Society) will be Saturday, December 8th at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 4 Northcrest Dr., Clifton Park, in their fellowship hall just off Rt. 146. We will gather at 12 noon with lunch to be served at 12:15 pm.

“Helping Hands” Toy or Book Donation:
We have decided to continue with our traditional theme again this year of “Helping Hands for the Holidays.” It was decided that we would ask both the Hosta and Daylily members to donate a NEW toy or children’s book that will be given to the Ronald McDonald Houses located near and in Albany Medical Center. The three-house complex has a special “Toy Closet” where a child can select one toy to take with them when heading for surgery or a major procedure at the Medical Center. We ask that those willing to donate should be careful to not purchase toys from bulk imported stores where the toy may not have US Safety Approval due to the way it is manufactured. Also, please do not wrap the gift. The ages for the toys or books should be 2 to 8 years old. If you have questions, please feel free to contact Cindy Jennings, the Holiday Party Chair

Gift Exchange:
Members who would like to be involved in a Holiday Gift Exchange should wrap a gift with an average price of $15.00 in value and bring it to the party. Please do not place any nametags on your gift. Only those who bring a gift to exchange are eligible to participate. We will use the same exchange rules as the last couple of years with each gift only being permitted to be swapped once; however, due to more people attending, you will have to be prepared to make your swap within one minute after your number is pulled or you will be asked to just take a new unopened gift from those remaining!

Dish to Share and Door Prizes:
As is our tradition, each member is asked to bring a favorite holiday dish to pass. A stove is available if food must be held at a warm temperature. As in the past, everyone is encouraged to bring a door prize to donate to make our festivities more memorable.

Please plan to Bring your Beautiful Photos to our Holiday Party!

Since members had so much fun at our previous photo contests, we thought we would repeat it again at this year’s Holiday Gathering. The BIG Difference though this year is we are following the criteria the American Hosta Society has set for their contest this year so you can enter our local contest and use the same Hosta photos for the National Competition if you are a member. We are also asking HADS Members to be involved and submit their favorite Daylily photos. Therefore, please sort through all those beautiful photos you have taken! Photos must be printed in 5” x 7” size for our contest with no frames
or mats.

We still feel that the most reasonable place to obtain the enlargements is at Wal-Mart, Target, Rite Aid, CVS, etc. but if you know of a better source…please let us know! When you arrive at the meeting, each member who will be entering photos will select their own mat color and mount their photos. A black or white mat will be supplied. Please place your name on the back side of each photo. Each member may submit up to two (2) photos per category.

Gil will present his program on Saturday evening following the banquet and business meeting. The host hotel is:

Please celebrate daylilies with us on July 19-20. Visit with old friends and make new friends while we all have “Fun in the Sun” on Long Island—you won’t want to miss it!

Check our website for details about each tour garden, open gardens, our speaker, fun things to do while you’re on Long Island, and more –

The categories for this year’s photo contest are as follows:
Category 1: Best Hosta/Daylily Close-up. Get up close. Focus on a single leaf/flower or just a few at most. Give us lots of detail.

Category 2: Best Picture of an Entire Mature Hosta or Daylily Clump. Make sure it’s a well grown clump. Give us a sense of its total impact on the senses. Make sure to identify the plant for us.

Category 3: Best Landscape Picture Showing Multiple Clumps of Hosta/Daylilies. Identify all the Varieties in the photo and keep the focus on the Hostas or Daylilies.
Category 4: Best Landscape Picture Involving Hosta/Daylilies. Can include other plants, garden structures or other non-plant accessories.

Category 5: Artistic Impression. Let your imagination run wild, but the photo must contain a Hosta or Daylily element. Can include digital manipulation (Photo shopping), montage, wildlife, etc. If there are any people in the photo they must be identified in the entry. If they are not, your entry will not be considered complete.

With permission, Dave Jennings and Stephanie Kronau would like to use your photos in one of UNYHS or HADS future newsletters. (A simple permission Form will be distributed at the meeting.) We would ask that you send the pic to Dave or Stephanie as an attachment for future use in UNYHS Shades of Green Newsletter
or HADS Update if you pic is selected
for use.

So please consider entering those beautiful photos and, of course, ribbons will be once again awarded!
